Supermodularity and System Welfare: The Economics of Integration

Supermodularity is the correct move for a blockchain that deliberately optimizes for maximum welfare. By selectively integrating critical primitives–like oracles, automation, data feeds, privacy gadgets, confidential computation, and interoperability–into the base layer, it’s possible to fix fragmentation, rent extraction, and coordination failures that degrade welfare for participants in a blockchain ecosystem. Concentrating control of critical functions into one entity (the chain itself) trades off some decentralization for greater coordination and alignment in the pricing and delivery of execution and execution-adjacent services.

Building Native Privacy for Real-World Blockchain Adoption

Over the years, public blockchains have shown that it is possible to build open, verifiable systems that handle valuable transactions at scale. However, despite continuous improvements in performance and scalability, blockchain technology has yet to see massive adoption. The biggest crypto-native applications have a fraction of the average web2 application’s user base, and many are confined to a narrow set of use cases. The problem has less to do with cost and speed and more with the inability of (public) blockchains to handle sensitive information privately and securely. Modern software depends on “secrets” such as personally identifiable information (PII), authentication credentials, API keys, proprietary data, and other information not intended to be accessible to unauthorized individuals or systems.

Reactive Transactions: A Model for Native Automation on Rialo

If decentralized systems are going to function like modern infrastructure, they cannot depend on a patchwork of offchain automation. They need a way for the chain itself to decide when to execute logic, rather than relying on external schedulers or monitoring systems. They need a mechanism for expressing asynchronous workflows that react to changing conditions and external signals inside the consensus process itself. In other words, they need a native automation layer that brings the same guarantees currently reserved for synchronous, user-driven execution.Reactive transactions provide exactly this capability.
